The annual Walk the World awareness event will take place on June 6th to raise funds and focus attention on the problem of child hunger. Organized by the World Food Programme (WFP), the event will take place in cities all over the world and as a “virtual walk” online, starts off in Auckland, New Zealand and, over 24 hours, circles the earth until it concludes in Somoa.
Walkers will include WFP staff, employees of corporate sponsors and celebrities raising money from donations by their individual sponsors.
According to WFP, “Last year, enough money was raised to provide school meals for one year to more than 20 thousand children in the world’s poorest countries.”
The Walk the World event is just one of WFP’s campaigns to draw awareness to, and combat, global hunger a problem whose global span means that “1.02 billion people do not have enough to eat: more than the populations of USA, Canada and the EU.”
