They are down to the quarterfinals in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Tomorrow the hosts, Angola, will face off against World Cup-bound Ghana and Ivory Coast and Algeria, both also South Africa bound, will play. On Monday Egypt and Cameroon will meet in a contest between a team bound for this year’s world championship (Cameroon) and one (Egypt) that feels as if it has something to prove to the global football community. Nigeria will confront upstart (and thus the new darling of a lot of African fans) Zambia.
My picks? Angola, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, and Nigeria advance. (Smart punters would be advised to bet the exact opposite of my prognostications!)
