I’m all for protests and differences of opinion — but there’s a time and a place for everything.
Within the last week, a group of Israeli and Palestinian left wing activists sprayed graffiti on the remnants of the Warsaw ghetto, calling for liberation of the Gaza Strip.
This incident is disturbing for several reasons, and not because of the symbolism intended by the protesters.
Graffiti and the desecration of historical sites is not the answer. The activists only helped soil a site that should serve as a symbol of the atrocities committed during and before World War Two. This graffiti only further fuels anti-semitic sentiment and is actually counter-productive to their message. Now, the nearby residents and sympathizers of the activists cause are disgusted by this vandalism, especially because the message could have been transmitted in several other ways that do not include desecrating a historical site.
Further, the Holocaust and genocide of the Jews is completely different than the actions of Israel against the terrorist Hamas infrastructure. The Jews were targeted purely for their religion, separated from their families and then systematically murdered. The Palestinians, on the other hand, enjoy self rule and are only forbidden from entering Israel in order to prevent the murder of innocent civilians, not prepare for a genocide. Theoretically, the residents of Gaza can enjoy a full life, create institutions and become a productive member of the global community — instead the Hamas terror regime has chosen to prioritize the killing of civilians and oppression of rights to its citizens over joining the rest of the world. Comparing the actions of Israel to those of Nazi Germany is not only inaccurate, its a dishonest manipulative tool that dismisses facts to slander a country that values life and freedom, not hate and genocide.
Lastly, the Gaza Strip is not occupied by Israel, which pulled out its presence, and some settlers by force, years ago. Gaza is actually occupied by the human rights-oppressing, Islamist Hamas terror regime. The people in Gaza should be freed from Hamas and given rights afforded to citizens of Israel, which includes voting rights and other freedoms granted to Arab-Israelis.
