OTR Event: Dr. Anne-Marie Slaughter – America Adrift: The End of the East Coast Foreign Policy Elite

The single most important force determining U.S. foreign policy in the 21st century is demographic change. For the first 250 years of its history, the United States was roughly 80% European American. From the mid-21st century onward, it will be roughly 50% European American, 25-30% Hispanic American, and 20% African and Asian American. That shift creates new opportunities for a new Atlantic hemisphere, but will also permanently destabilize traditional northern transatlantic relations.

Dr. Anne-Marie Slaughter is a global leader, scholar and public commentator. She is currently CEO of New America, a think and action tank dedicated to renewing the promise of America in a period of rapid demographic, technological, and global change. She previously served as a professor of international, foreign, and comparative law at Harvard Law School; dean of the School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University; and as the first woman director of policy planning for the United States Department of State.
