5th Milestones of the Global Campaign for Violence Prevention Meeting

The 5th Milestones in a Global Campaign for Violence Prevention Meeting will take place in Cape Town, South Africa, on 6-7 September 2011. The meeting is being generously hosted by the Western Cape Provincial Government’s Department of Health, with additional support from The California Wellness Foundation.

Meeting programme

The 5th Milestones Meeting will include high-level political officials from several countries engaged in cutting-edge violence prevention programmes; state-of-the-science presentations by some of the world’s leading experts on the primary prevention of interpersonal violence in general, and of child maltreatment, intimate partner and sexual violence, and youth violence in particular; and policy discussions involving several United Nations agencies and international foundations.

The full programme is still being developed, but to date we are delighted to announce that among the speakers who have confirmed their participation are:

• Dr Luis Fernando Duque, PREVIVA, Medellin, Colombia;
• Dr David Finkelhor, University of New Hampshire, USA;
• Dr Rachel Jewkes, Medical Research Council of South Africa;
• Dr Keith Krause, Small Arms Survey, Geneva, Switzerland; and
• Dr Bernadette Madrid, University of the Philippines.

Representatives from several international partners – including the UBS Opitmus Foundation, UNDP, and the World Bank have also confirmed their participation.
