The latest anti-Israel film comes out of Egypt, and this one’s garnering significant attention throughout the Arab world. The film, Welad Ela’am, depicts an Egyptian woman who falls in love with an Israeli Mossad agent in disguise. He then drugs her and their children to transfer them to a Tel Aviv suburb against their will.
The female lead describes Israel as a “nightmare” and Israelis as “racist.”
This depiction is no surprise as Israeli-Egyptian relations have always been cold. Egyptians rarely go to Israel while Israelis traveling to Egypt stick to tourist destinations in the Sinai Penninsula or tour groups to travel throughout the rest of the country. Israel repeatedly issues travel warnings to its citizens urging them to take extreme caution if going to Egypt. Earlier this year, the Egyptian government apprehended Hezbollah agents in Sinai who were on a quest to abduct Israeli tourists.
Tension, stemming from multiple Egypt-Israeli wars, accelerated further with Israel’s strike on the Gaza Strip nearly one year ago. Earlier this year, I wrote about a television program from Turkey that similarly slandered Israelis and was set during the Gaza offensive.
Egypt has attempted to insert itself in a slew of Israel-related developments, including efforts to free abducted IDF soldier Gilad Shalit, Palestinian reconciliation, and the peace process as a whole.
I haven’t yet seen the movie, but I will! It sounds like quite the thriller. It’s foundation is likely inaccurate, but the tension is clearly tangible. But, seriously, check out this trailer; it looks awesome.
