We will spend a lot of time looking at the crisis in Darfur on this blog. At the moment I want to leave you with a short note on an important development that will likely impact the innocent victims of Darfur.
According to the BBC shooting has been heard in two separate parts of Sudan's capital, Khartoum, following a raid by Darfur rebels.
A senior JEM official told the BBC that JEM rebels would continue to attack Khartoum and oil installations in South Kordofan. Their goal is to cut off the Sudanese government's main source of income.
The BBC reported over the weekend that the JEM rebels claimed to have taken control of Omdurman and the Wadi Saidna air force base. They also entered the capital itself.
Darfur is clearly a massive human rights concern. It is also part of a broader problem – the failing state that is Sudan. Fighting inside the capital suggests things may get a lot worse in Sudan before they get better.
I'll blog more when things become a bit clearer.
