Next week, there’s a conference on Capitol Hill focused on U.S. relations in the Middle East one year into the Obama Administration. The event is sponsored by The Project on Middle East Democracy, the United States Institute of Peace, and Georgetown University’s Center for Democracy and Civil Society and will include a keynote from Sen. Robert Casey (D-PA), chair of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs.
While a bulk of the half day conference may not focus exclusively on Israel, the peace process and the Iran nuclear threat are likely to continuously be referenced and may dominate the discussion. Moreover, as the Turkey-Israel rift rages on, the Syrian peace front is all but dead, and the security barrier at the Rafah crossing with Egypt is resulting in additional pressure on relations, various Israel-related issues could come up.
