The announcement this morning that Iran will give up the bulk of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey has been met with quite a bit of fanfare. However, the deal is virtually irrelevant.
This deal was put in place in an effort to curb sanctions and provide the impression that Iran wants to negotiate and make concessions. However, that is merely a smoke and mirrors attempt to deceive the Western public.
Iran has vowed that it will continue its nuclear program. Therefore, Iran could resupply itself with low enriched uranium in the near future.
But, the low enriched uranium was never the concern. Instead, the West and Israel are more concerned with highly enriched uranium that is suitable for nuclear weapons. It is that technology which is unacceptable for Iran to have — not the low enriched uranium.
Israel will not sit idly by as Iran continues to develop the real threat that is nuclear weapons. Israel has no problem with Iran obtaining civilian nuclear power, but Iran cannot be trusted that its civilian program will not escalate to focus on military capabilities.
This charade of a deal — orchestrated by Brazil and Turkey — threatens to confuse and distort reality, and we should not lose sight of the real threat of highly enriched uranium and continued construction at nuclear facilities in Iran. And, due to that threat, the possibility of air strikes on Iran are still a very likely possibility.
